Booking Your Driving Theory Test
Staying safe and knowing the roads is so important - book your theory test today and learn all about hazards and The Highway Code
Should I book my theory test before I start my practical driving lessons or wait until I have some experience on the road?
When thinking about booking your theory test, you have the choice of two options. You could book your theory before carrying out any practical driving lessons or you could start proceeding with your driving lessons whilst thinking of booking your theory test. This will be down to your own preferences, however we strongly advise you get your theory test done sooner rather than later as you will not be able to carry out your practical test until you have passed your theory.
What do I need to learn and understand in order to pass my theory test?
Your theory test will assess you on your knowledge of the Highway Code and your ability to react to hazards that may affect you whilst on the road. You may have some experience of this beforehand if you have carried out driving lessons before proceeding with your theory test. The theory test is split into two different parts, multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test, this is compulsory for all learner drivers. You will need to pass both parts of this test to pass your theory test.
What the multiple choice theory questions will test you on...
01
The Highway Code
The highway code consists of all of the rules that all road users must follow, road signs and symbols and what to do in an emergency.
02
Traffic Signs
You'll be expected to know about the signing system, regulatory signs and speed limit signs. This demonstrates that you will be able understand the highway rules and advisories for the area in which you are driving at any given time.
03
The Essential Skills Of Driving
These questions will be linked to driving techniques. This may include questions related to overtaking safely, using limit points, defensive driving and manoeuvring.
To Pass: You will need to achieve 43 out of 50 to pass this section of the test.
The Hazard Perception Test
The Hazard Perception is a test to assess your reaction times when spotting any developing hazards that may cause you to change speed or direction whilst you’re driving.
You’ll watch 14 video clips. The clips will feature everyday road scenes and contain at least one developing hazard (one of the clips features 2 developing hazards). You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.
To Pass: You will need to score 44 out of a possible 75 to pass this section of the test.
How much does the Theory Test cost and what else should I know?
Your theory test will cost you £23 and this includes both parts of the test, multiple choice questions and your hazard perception.
I would strongly suggest that you feel ready and prepared for your theory before booking it. You can
book your theory test through the GOV website here.
