ADI Instructor Training Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3

01   ADI - Part One Theory Test

The theory test is the first part of your journey to become a driving instructor.

The training course aims to re-cap and question your knowledge at a higher level of a learner driver, meaning it is most important you revise and prepare for this test as much as can.

The test is based around a selection of multiple-choice questions, which you will be expected to get at least 85 out of 100 and a Hazard Perception section to which you must receive 57 out of 75 (76%).

02   ADI - Part Two Practical Driving Ability Test

The Practical test is a 60-minute test which you will take in Worcester test centre depending on your area.

This is an advanced practical driving test in which you will be expected to demonstrate a professional level of your driving ability with a DVSA examiner.

It includes an eyesight check, ‘Show me, tell me vehicle safety questions, your general driving ability, 2 manoeuvres which could include Parallel park, Bay Park, Reserve Park or pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and re-join the traffic. You’ll also have to do a 20-minute independent drive which could be ‘Following traffic signs’ or ‘Following directions from a sat nav’.

You cannot get more than 6 minors and not incur any Major faults.

You have 3 attempts at this test.

03   ADI - Part Three Testing Your Ability to Teach A Pupil

The final stage is a test that checks your instructional ability to teach a pupil.

The examiner will sit behind you and observe you for 60- minutes. You will conduct a normal driving lesson, or you will be able to take a qualified driver who needs further tuition.

You get 3 attempts at this test! If you exceed this then you will need to wait until your current theory runs out to be able re-do all parts of each test again enabling, you to continue your career as a driving instructor.

What happens once you pass all DVSA tests?

After passing Part 1, 2 & 3 of the DVSA tests, you will be awarded a green badge at a cost of £300 which will mean you have just become a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

Will I be qualified for life? Regular Standard Checks

Although you will have just become a new qualified ADI, unfortunately you will still receive ADI standard checks at least once every 4 years. This test is Free.
